Executive Role Consultancy Being a senior executive in any organisation can be an extremely lonely position. From time to time all executives experience situations that bother them professionally and personally. Quite often such situations are experienced around issues of leadership and authority. The result can mean an adverse effect on the performance of not only the individual executive but also of those working with them and ultimately the whole organisation. The difficulty is who can the executive turn to? In theory it should be possible to try to resolve the problem with a variety of people. However, the many reasons that make it such a lonely position may also inhibit the executive from seeking advice in these quarters. Thus the very circumstances of the problem are frequently the reason for its perpetuation. We take the view that these are not normally individual problems that can be solved by, for example, the executive attending a course. Rather, they are organisational problems and the individual executive is required to be seen as a person-in-role in an organisational system. Thus any attempt at gaining a greater understanding of the situation needs to take into consideration the wider organisational system. This can best be achieved not by the importation of ‘new’ knowledge but by a better understanding of the ‘current’ or experiential knowledge. Executive Role Consultancy is a process that has been successfully developed to help individual clients by supporting executives in a process of development. We feel that they need someone neutral to talk about the issues in their work that bother them. The material for work is the client’s experiences in his or her own working situation. That is, the executive’s perceptions, thoughts, feelings, images, and described behaviour of interactions with those they relate to day by day. Working with this material the consultant seeks to enable clients to develop their understanding of themselves by learning how to analyse, and modify, the way in which they interpret their organisational roles. Executive Role Consultancy consists of a series of one and a half or two-hourly consultations held at monthly intervals over a period of twelve months and these are normally carried out in the executive’s own office or other private accommodation. It is a totally confidential service that will help individuals to become more effective, with concomitant results for the organisation. |
