In recent months the online space has been a necessary, and sometimes the only space for maintaining social connection, in the face of an unprecedented global pandemic. In some ways it is a familiar space — we can see each other, we can listen, we can communicate. But in other ways it is deeply unfamiliar. How do we find our feet? How do we make connection? How do we make sense of the sheer variety of voices? In a world that is changing dramatically, what kind of opportunities and limits occur in this new environment, at one moment appearing solid, and then the next vanishing? This experiential group relations conference will, amongst other things, explore how we find voice and connection in turbulent times.

A Group Relations Conference is an experiential event comprising of a series of large group, small group and inter-group formations. The staff team work to keep the boundaries of time and task. They also offer thoughts and questions to help learning. Learning may be related to discovering something about one’s impact on others, the impact of others on oneself, how groups form, focus, or unravel, and the associations this may have with one’s own personal and professional context. We welcome people who have not previously attended this kind of event.

Chris Tanner (Conference Director) is an organisational consultant and senior lecturer at the University of Essex Dept of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies. This follows his earlier career in therapeutic communities. In recent years he has led group relations events at OPUS, University of Essex, Birkbeck College and the Lithuanian GR Society.
Olya Khaleelee (Associate Director) is a corporate psychologist and organisational consultant. She has been associated with the Tavistock Institute for over thirty years in developing group relations both in the UK and abroad and was the first female director of the Leicester Conference, which explores authority, leadership and organisation from a psychoanalytic and systemic perspective. She was the first Director of OPUS, and is currently OPUS chair.
Carlos Remotti-Breton (Associate Director) is an organisational and leadership consultant. He is a Clinical Part-time Professor of Organisational Behaviour at IAE Business School where he leads experiential learning and group dynamics programmes. Carlos trained at INSEAD and Tavistock Clinic participating as member of staff in several group relations conferences. Carlos is a Board Member and Company Secretary of OPUS.
